This story is an amazing one, the Christmas story from a completely different focus. Max Lucado is kind and wise, and it shows in this telling.

To the person who said that the book tries to convert people, and that's it's religious... Yes. It's the story of the birth of Christ and the love of God. So, it does certainly have a religious focus - a Christian focus. That's the point.

Not just for Christmas

I recieved this book as a Christmas gift 2 or three years ago. I read it to my daughter all the time. It is a wonderfull version of the Christmas Story through the eyes of the angel Gabriel. Absolutly perfect for young teens, though it may be a bit advanced for very young readers. (You can always read it to them!) Beautiful illustrations, wonderfully written. You don't have to save it until Christmas either, it's a perfect book to read anytime. Not very long, only takes about 10 minutes or so to read. Just fantastic, I can't say enough!

About the Author
The cartoonist and illustrator Brecht Evens was born in 1986 and studied illustration in Ghent, Belgium. His debut graphic novel, The Wrong Place, started out as a graduation project and went on to win an award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Evens's follow-up, The Making Of, was nominated for the Eisner Award and an Angoulême award. His comics have been published in English, French, Spanish, German, Norwegian, Italian, and Flemish. Evens lives in Paris.

Sarah Rosedahl is an artist and recovering software engineer. I have to say I'm rather disappointed. If you're expecting detail to color in you will be too. Each page, with exception to maybe one or 2 is simply an outline of a chicken. No feathers to color in, no separate hackles, nada. I don't think it's interesting enough even for a 2 year old.

At Last!

This book will become a classic... Like other reviewers, I have copies of many of the important works on matrix theory, but, for example- Needed a result on simultaneous diagonalization. Where to find it? In "Introduction to Statistical Pattern Recognition", Fukunaga, or do it from scratch, or... in this text, along with pretty much every other result that I could want. So, I'm buying a copy both for its completeness and organization. It'll be the first stop every time I'm scratching my head over a matrix algebra problem. Thanks to Bernstein for making my life a bit easier.

Where do you find that arcane result ?

Sometimes it is very difficult to find out a matrix theorem that is used in a technical publication.

I have books by Gantmacher, Horn, Meyer (undergraduate), Kunze and Hoffman and Jan Magnus but if you NEED to quickly find a result, open this book. Thousands of matrix theorems and facts.

I found this to be an extremely useful book. Its internal organization, extensive index and tables of symbols make it very easy to find exactly the result you need.

I strongly recommend this book to people working in applied mathematics or engineering.

Whether you are a law student or a person with an interest in studying the practical principles behind legal writing, Calleros has so eloquently, yet strategically written this book in such a way that has taken some complicated legal terms, functions, and application of legal theory and breaks the material down into parts that are easier, and less complicated. This book has helped me tremendously--in terms of feeling more confident in my understanding of "Legal Methods and Writing" and, therefore, I have given this book a 5-star rating. In my opinion, having a good understanding is most of the battle of any craft we wish to perfect; the everyday practice of that craft would be the rest!
Thank you, Mr. Calleros, for sharing your knowledge so that others might feel more confident to pursue their legal interests. I am very grateful, and I am glad my professor has selected this book for our class to study.

Mary Miller's Big World is the second book and first work of fiction to come out of Short Flight/Long Drive Books, a publishing arm of the independent literary journal Hobart. The characters in Mary Miller's debut short story collection are at once autonomous and lonesome, possessing both a longing to connect with those around them and a cynicism regarding their ability to do so, whether they're holed up in a motel room in Pigeon Forge with an air gun shooting boyfriend as in "Fast Trains" or navigating the rooms of their house with their dad after their mother s death as in "Leak." Mary Miller's writing is unapologetically honest and efficient and the gut-wrenching directness of her prose is reminiscent of Mary Gaitskill and Courtney Eldridge, if Gaitskill's and Eldridge's stories were set in the south and reeked of spilt beer and cigarette smoke.

Mary Miller is the author of a story collection, BIG WORLD, and a chapbook, Less Shiny. Her stories have appeared or are forthcoming in American Short Fiction, Ninth Letter, McSweeney's Quarterly, Mississippi Review, Black Clock, Indiana Review, and others. Her fiction has been anthologized in New Stories from the South (2008) and Dzanc's Best of the Web (2010).

Big Humor, Big Sadness, Big Truth

I could say that Mary Miller's Big World is a wonderful collection, which it is, and that the stories in it remind me of how I feel when reading stories by Charles Baxter (or Bobbie Ann Mason), and they are all excellent because Baxter (and Mason) seems to ONLY write excellent stories. I could say that if I taught a writing class, which is a wildly hilarious idea (the thought of me teaching anything!), I would add stories from Big World into the curriculum because they encompass everything one should want a short story to have, which is to say they are truthful, funny and sad, and many other things also. I could say a lot about this book, really, but I won't. What I WILL say is that I recommend Big World to people who like reading strong writing about flawed (yet remarkably interesting) characters, and I recommend it highly because that's how this book rolls.

small big world?

i was reading this book while sitting alone in a japanese restaurant in atlanta. i was there on business and hadn't been to the city in years (or that izakaya ever). from a nearby table someone asked me how i like the book since one of her best friends was the author. my reaction was that i loved it so much that i wished i could spend a weekend with mary miller making a lot of bad decisions. the writing is filled with suddeness and, to me, remarkable narrative fractures they made me stop to read whole sections repeatedly. the women that populate these stories are human and self-aware to such a degree that the sometimes brutal world they inhabit becomes lovely.

Read this book now!

Read this book now. Drop everything else. Miller's hopeless characters and bleak settings will make your nervously smile and crave cigarettes, whiskey, and cheap hotel rooms. The hilarious indifference of the narrator shines a light down on the darkness of the subject matter which deals a lot with death and bad/mediocre/awkward relationships. Mary Miller says it best herself, "I tried not to hold it against God. It wasn't God's fault that all the sick people in the world latched onto him."
