Jack Handey as an Angry, Pugnacious Drunk in a Bird Suit

Remember Jack Handey and his "Deep Thoughts" from the old Saturday Night Live? Slightly off-kilter, vaguely inane and sort of gormless, but somehow deeply insightful, musings? Well, take that same sort of one-liner humor, but make it psychotically angry and twisted and use it to caption pretty, but intense, bird paintings. That's more or less what you get here.

Usually you don't have pretty, colorful, cute birds telling you "I'll Even Kill Your Soul". The occasional brief, unnerving comments and observations and stories that lead you from picture to picture just add to the wild wrongness of the whole setup and make this a deeply satisfying and essential guide. You ignore it at your peril.

The Best of the Street Fighter Comics

Street Fighter Classic: Volume 1 is basically a retelling of the classic Street Fighter story from Street Fighter II the Animated Movie. Ryu and Ken are travelling around trying to find information on the death of Master Gouken. M. Bison is trying to get more information on Ryu because of his sky high Chi while Guile and Chun Li trying to track down Shadowloo because both lost people they cared about thanks to Bison. To say this is just a retelling isn’t really a criticism. As long as it’s done well and adds something new to the story I’m cool with it and volume 1 does flesh things out a bit. In fact it basically combines the story of SF II and SF Alpha which focused on Akuma and the Dark Hadouken.

The art here is a bit inconsistent, likely because there are a lot of artists involved, but overall it’s quite good. The story is boilerplate but I admit I was a little disappointed in many of the fights which were generally beatdowns. I know Vega is considered better than Honda but it would have been nice to see Handa get in at least one shot. The first actual back and forth fight was between Ken and Zangief and that was only because Ken was distracted.

I own a handful of the paperback SF books and they’re quite nice when it comes to artwork but the binding is awful and even reading them carefully the pages ended up coming loose. I avoided rereading them just to prevent further damage and that’s not a good place to be in. The hardcover books have no such issues. They are considerably larger in terms of physical size and page count. They use threaded binding so there should be no issues with pages falling out. The HC books are quite a bit more expensive but due to the fragility of the paperbacks for me it’s a no brainer. These are the best SF comics I have ever read bar none.

As a Street Fighter fan, i've been looking for hardcover of the UDON comic book series for years. Unfortunately, the previous hardcovers, Street Fighter Ultimate Edition 1,2 and 3, went out of print.
So i was happy to see that UDON made a new oversized hardcover series, Street Fighter Classic, and having bought the first volume, it is outstanding.
The binding is the same as the recently released Super Street Fighter Vol. 1 and Street Fighter Origins: Akuma, which is a good thing.
The book collects Street Fighter #1-10, along with the bonus stories and cover art.
I won't say anything about the story, but if you're a fan as well, you won't regret it.

Solid Book, but need to be more detail before buying it.

This is honestly a good book. The only reason why I have to lower it one star is because it is the same book from the volume 1 through 6 that was on paper back. Except this have the bonus content from Volume 4 and content from from 1 and 2. If you have the paper back version and want to buy the hard cover, be very mindful that it is still the same story. Only that it have Volume 4 mix in with the chapters too make sense of the story of what going on. So there really is nothing new other that it larger and it a hard cover version.

A great movie pales compared to this

I rarely read a book after I have seen the movie it was based on because it seems almost akin to reading the final pages of the book first. Why start reading a book when you already know how it ends? When the movie already gives you a mental picture of what the characters are like? When it would be impossible to read the description of a scene, a conversation, an expression, or a mood without thinking first of the director's and screenwriter's interpretation of those things?
I stand by that view, but I also suggest throwing it out the window when it comes to The Pianist.
I was so moved by the film that when I saw this book in a store, I could not help but pick it up. Once in my hands, I could not help but read the first few lines. Once I read them, I could not help but buy the book. And once I bought it, the next day and a half of my life was dominated by the chilling, horrible, graphic and compelling story.
I won't go into an overview of the plot, since my fellow reviewers have covered that territory very accurately. But I will say that this is a rare case where the value of a book is not compromised by the movie -- the story is so well told and the details (most of which the movie screenwriter was forced to leave out) are so evocative and potent that they flow over and around any preconceived notions.
The film is well done, and by all means it should be seen. But don't let seeing the movie deprive you of the pleasure of this powerful book, which illustrates once again what we have known all along -- that great literature succeeds where other art forms fall short.

In January 2000, while visiting Warsaw, I met "Pan Wladek," the retired Director of Music at the Polish Radio. I read a book by him about his survival in the Nazi-occupied capital, and I was intrigued by the fact that I knew all the places he mentioned in the book. I was not surprised to learn that he still lives in the same part of Warsaw that I am from. I knew exactly where to find him.
Pan Wladek was a composer, honored by President of Poland with a Commander Order with a Star of Polonia Restituta. Although for decades he was known to millions for producing popular rather than classical music. He was responsible for launching the careers of many Polish singers. They often complained at first for choosing them the wrong material, almost every time he proved them wrong. A composer of nearly 500 songs; many made the pop charts. My favorite was the one about going to the Old Town, how he described the beauty of the restored part of the city, which was almost completely destroyed during WWII as Hitler's revenge against the Home Army's Warsaw Uprising in 1944. As a child, I learned that song from my grandmother and I sang it to my daughter years later. By the age of 2, she knew it by heart. That January, I visited the author.
After three attempts (finally, I realized that I was knocking on the wrong door), I met Pani Halina, the musician's wife, a doctor who comes from a prominent Polish family. She was an example of hospitality, feeding me with coffeecake and preserves, chatting but not letting me disturb her husband who as she explained was not feeling well that day. I sighed, but had no right to push my luck any farther. We hugged, and I walked to the door when I looked up the stairs. And there he was, the maestro. He was wearing silky navy blue pajamas with tiny white polka dots and a brown velvet robe with his gray hair nonchalantly combed off his face. He walked down slowly. Standing there, speechless, I was yelled at by Pan Wladek for letting my husband wait in the car while I'm chatting and drinking coffee with his wife. I grabbed my husband and brought him before the man. We were treated to the tour of the memory lane; the grand piano in the corner of the living room had a collection of photographs. Pan Wladek traveled the whole world as a member of the Warsaw Piano Quintet. He traveled everywhere but Australia. He talked about his musician friend Bronislaw Gimpel who lived in LA. We learned his whole family story, about the son who lives in Japan and the other one from Hamburg. He was just as I imagined: wise, dignified, well mannered, and funny above it all.
He displayed his disappointment that the American version of his book did not include photographs, as the German edition did.
Later, he mentioned that a famous Polish director contacted him about making a movie based on his book but he was very skeptical, it seemed so unreal. So we just laughed.
Pan Wladek died the following July at age 88. Three years later, I sat in the West Newton movie theatre watching 6 years of his life before my eyes on a big screen. The famous director's name was Polanski. Pan Wladek's last name was Szpilman and he is the main character behind "The Pianist" now "playing in a theatre near you". In the collaboration of three Poles: Fryderyk Chopin, Wladyslaw Szpilman and Roman Polanski, a masterpiece was created. Palme d'Or for the Best Picture at Cannes' International Film Festival was followed by the Boston Film Critics Award, New York Critics Award, and 7 Oscar nominations. In the 80's, the children of the German officer who in the last days of the war offered Szpilman a coat and chose not to kill him, visited Mr.Szpilman in Warsaw. They do not remember their father but learned about Mr.Szpilman from his letters from stalag. The pictures in a photo album beautifully arranged by the officer's daughter in law, showed Mr. Szpilman climbing the stairs to the attic where he hid. The little boy next to him is the grandson of the German officer. Another photograph shows Mr. Szpilman in a beautiful tailored suit and the officer's son exploring together the streets of Warsaw's Old Town. I feel privileged that I had an opportunity to meet Mr.Szpilman, and I feel obligated to share it with you.

An Unforgettable Story of Survival

The Pianist is a moving eye-witness account of one man's survival in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Wladyslaw Szpilman--a Jew and famed pianist for Polish Radio--relates his memories of the unutterable and unrelenting horrors of the Holocaust in Warsaw--the random executions, starving children, mass deportations--with a sober, almost uncanny detachment. And though the machinery of extermination is all around him, he somehow evades his pursuers through friends willing to risk their lives to hide him. His father, mother, two sisters and a brother are all deported and sent to their deaths in concentration camp. And, when it appears, near war's end, that he is at the end of luck, trying to still keep himself concealed in a part of Warsaw that his been systematically destroyed by the Germans, he finds an unexpected saviour: Wilm Hosenfeld, a German Army captain who, rather than kill Szpilman, provides him with a hiding place and necessities to kept him alive until the Soviet Army finally liberates the city. This slim volume written with in a kind of terse, no-nonsense style that will keep the reader riveted to each episode in Szpilman's incredible Odyssey, is probably one of the best books I have read in the area of Holocaust literature.

Desperate, Leo and his father, Oscar, plan for Leo to take $80,000 worth of bonds from Horace's safe-deposit box. However, knowing that he is to be short-lived, Horace has his box brought to him. Discovering the theft, he informs his wife that he has willed the bonds to her. He promises to say nothing about the theft, calling it a loan. Cruelly, Regina recalls their unhappy married life, causing Horace to be stricken with a severe attack. Regina refuses to get his medicine upstairs, hoping that the effort of climbing may prove fatal. Horace collapses. Then Regina blackmails her brothers into giving her 75% of the business instead of their planned 33 1/3%, or she will reveal their theft. We feel, however, that crafty Ben holds the trump card by his parting remark, "What was a man in a wheelchair doing on a staircase?"

A Tremendous Story of Familial Greed

"The Little Foxes" by Lillian Hellman is a brilliant display of a family driven to disaster by overwhelming greed and desire. Regina, Ben, and Oscar Hubbard are siblings who work together, forsaking all others, to obtain for themselves money and power. These three "foxes" attempt to form a partnership with Mr. Marshall, a business man from Chicago, which would help to bring the northern cotton factories down to the south. Originally, it is agreed that the three will split the profit evenly, but Regina grows greedy when she realizes that there is a possibility for her to get more. She deceives her brothers, claiming that her husband Horace has failed to commit to the plan because he desires a larger percentage of the profit. But when the ailing Horace is brought home by his daughter Alexandra, he learns of the plans of his deceptive wife. He decides to take no part in this plan saying, "I'll do no more harm now. I've done enough. I'll die my own way. I'll do it without making the world any worse. I leave that to you." Once again, the evil within the Hubbard family strikes when Horace's money is stolen and invested without his knowing. Instead of growing angry, Horace forms a perfect reasoning for the situation, one in which all the good left in the family will benefit, and all the evil will suffer. But despite Horace's belief that he had tied his wife's hands this time, she still reigns the victor once again in the end.
Throughout the play, Hellman utilizes the development of one character in particular to help parallel the realization of the evil and greed within the family. Horace and Regina's daughter, Alexandra, is perhaps the only innocent family member left in the Hubbard clan. She innocently believes that her trip to retrieve her father from a northern hospital is simply to bring him home and never considers her mother's selfish motives. The "foxes" even consider utilizing Alexandra as a tool in their sick and twisted plans by having her marry her cousin Leo; through this, they could keep the money in the family. But as the play continues, the readers begin to realize that Alexandra will not be duped into following the horrible footprints that her family has left throughout the South. Instead, the readers realize her revolt with the final words of the play, "Are you afraid, Mama?" This quote alone foreshadows Alexandra's breaking away from the family to form a life of truth and happiness of her own. Hellman develops Alexandra in this way to show the possibility of a little sunlight in such a rainy and horrible lifestyle.
Overall, Hellman's play is a tremendous success in developing a set of characters who falsely show love to each other in order to help obtain riches and powers within each of their own lives. This brilliant show of intense familial greed illustrates how such selfish desires can lead to the breakdown of not only a family, but each member within it.

The Little Foxes

The Little Foxes written by Lillian Hellman is an excellant read. Hellman's play shows the evils and innocence of the south that plauged it at the turn of the century. Hellman divides the characters of her book into the evil and innocent. The innocent not being able to stop the evil and only standing by and watching it happen. The Little Foxes shows that people brought up in bad times, surroundings and society can overcome these ills or fall prey to them. The Little Foxes is an excellant and captivating read with the good, the bad and the ugly of society. I liked The Little Foxes because it is a dramatic read with lively and spirited characters who keep you turning the pages.

One opens the autobiography of Martin Luther King's closest associate and friend with excitement. Unfortunately, Abernathy makes slight contribution to what we know already about Montgomery, Selma, and the several other great episodes of the civil rights era upon which he focuses, and he entirely omits others, such as the 1963 March on Washington. Nor does he attempt to lure readers with intimate disclosures. Regarding political rivalry and sexual pastimes among movement leaders he is, on the whole, reticent. He is more interesting in the account of his 1980 endorsement (now regretted) of Ronald Reagan. When King chose Abernathy as his successor, he lacked power to transfer the stature he had won in civil-rights leadership, and Abernathy has always suffered in comparison. This autobiography, awkwardly and incompletely told, will not adjust his historical standing. Necessary only for collections in civil rights.

truth without varnish

Ralph Abernathy wrote his life's story warts and all. He also spoke honestly about his dear friend, Doc and his private life. Doc was Martin Luther King Jr. and a lot of people reacted almost violently to the revelations in the book. Abernathy was called a traitor, a Judas and an Uncle Tom. He was also accused of being senile or insane with jealousy of Dr. King's memory. Sadly, with all the name calling people forgot or ignored the fact that it's a good autobiography and a valuable edition to the historical record of the Civil Rights movement.

Not what you've been led to believe

When this first came out around 1990, stupid rumors abounded that Dr.King's right-hand-man and surrogate brother had written a sleazy text about Dr. King's sex life. This bunch of hogwash and the cruel responses by people who beleived the hype drove Dr. Abernathy to his grave! This is actually a very good book filled with interesting anecdotes about Dr. Abernathy's years as a soldier in the Civil Rights movement. However, he pulls no punches regarding the infighting that destroyed what was left of the movement after Dr. King's death. This is an important historical memoir by one who was certainly there.

A well written, truthful biography of a powerful Movement..

I'm so glad I read this book, but am sorry it took me more than a decade to learn that Dr. Abernathy hadn't "sold out" Martin Luther King as was reported in the media when this book was first published. Unfortunately, Dr. Abernathy died before he knew all of black America hadn't turned on him. He told a truthful story of a movement led by strong, yet very "human" men and women. None of us are without our weaknesses, but those weaknesses do not define the total of who we are. Just as Dr. Abernathy's depiction of the weaknesses in himself and in Dr. King don't define the whole tone of this book. I'm glad I read it, and I shared it with my mother who also read it from cover to cover with relish. I appreciate the MLK's and the Ralph David Abernathy's who made such a sacrifice so I could have the rights of every other human being living in the United States.
