Nope. Just Nope.

This is the fifth book in The Angel Pack Series. To make sense of this series you need to read them in order -- With Dante's Mates (Beyond the Angel Pack) before this one.

Yes, I've read every book in this series. I've done a few reviews. Unfortunately this one didn't work for me and I'll give the reasons why.

SPOILERS

Thanksgiving already happened in Dante's Mates. Yet this story starts out with a step back in time. We hear about Thanksgiving and a guest downstairs but none of the chaos. It's like Raffy and Christian are in a bubble, unexposed to the outside world as Raffy heals. We see a bit of what happened in the last book with Dante, Dare, and Dale having trouble with their mating.

So then it's Christmas and gift giving. Time moves on as Raffy heals and Christian works to gain his mate's trust. The focus on this story is Raffy's mating and his impact on Micah's Pack.

Many of the events are concluded in this story. We finally hear what happened to Seth. Remember, he was imprisioned in the last book along with his mate. In this story he's questioned. While I'm happy with how things turned out. . . Yes, Seth and his mate are sent away but then we never hear from Seth. Storm survives the purging but nothing on Seth. And then there's the blow up with Gabriel and Taylor. A big fight and no resolve. Taylor was really upset with Gabe.

And that's the way this story went. We have a scene and some things are left out.
Like Micah punching Ryland and nothing about the Fae King suffering with a bruised up face. Or if he was healed.
Cass and Gabriel were shot with silver. Nothing about getting them medical help once they were rescued. Events go on around them but nothing on their care, not even from their mates.
What happened to the rogues with their leaders gone.
Ryland and Phenex need to resolve their issues.
Of all things - I thought they were typos / grammatical errors when Noah spoke. I'd completely forgotten he talks in fragments.

I was bored at the many smex scenes. I wanted more of the plot to unfold or be solved. And it wasn't just the many romps once Raffy and Christian get their act together. It's everyone in the series, up to this point, has got something to say about everything. New shoes and dress? Everyone comments. Going shopping? Everyone has to hear what they bought. A black cat? Let's all go to the kitchen and see what that's about. A rescue planned and executed? Sure, we just read all about it happening -- Let's all gather and sit to hear how that happened. And read it all over again.

Yes, I'll admit. I did a lot of page skipping in this one. It didn't satisfy, I ended up interested in the unresolved side plots than what was happening in Raffy's bed. I mean I was waiting on some runners to go out and communicate with other paranormals and establish some temporary leadership. But no, instead we get a trip to the local club and the story ends. I would have liked some resolve between the complaining warriors and Jesse. Or a confession to their alpha. No, it just didn't work for me.

I hope the next story will focus on restructuring the paranormal world and rebuilding trust between species. And a glossary. - Dan's Wife

Inventive fairy tale for adults

I give this 4 stars because of the amount of inventive fantasy - the different kinds of powers unleashed, the ways everybody seems to have a role to play in their battle against the evil. BUT I grew a bit tired of all the tears flowing and all the sad glances given all the time. Everybody is entitled to tears from time to time - even the big bad wolf king. But so much and so often!?

I enjoyed the different kinds of cross-dressing featured here. I don't think I have read about that previously.

The MC in this story are said to be Raphael and Christian and their way towards mating is there. All the way from the first meeting between the scared and psychically scarred Raphael, rescued after five years of captivity and Christian, through weeks of patient companionship and wooing to the final mating - the necessary event for revealing Raphael's powers.

I have read "Trust" and wanted to know what would happen next. In this story the evil has struck against the leaders of the paranormal world. And this time they needed both the physical strength of the Alpha and his enforcers AND the psychic powers of the the mates. The heart, the guardian, the omega, the witch and the familiar joined the powers and not only freed Jesse from the spell that locked his mind, but turned Malachi's spells against himself.

Since the two villains are not dead, I suppose there are more stories to come, but for now they are detained.

Underneath is just fantastic.

I loved book 5 of the Angel Pack. I can't wait for each of Maggie Walsh's books to come out. This book involves the lovely Raffy and his mate Christian. Raffy has spent years being tortured by the ever-present bad guys and is finally saved and brought back to his family. Christian is just amazing, so loving and caring. Not wanting to hurt Raffy further he waits until Raffy makes the moves on him before claiming him. Lots of tension in the book and lots of tears flowed as the characters dealt with all their pain. A wonderfully written book. Highly recommend it. Thanks Maggie Walsh, and keep writing.

Asbestos Head is the man

CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

“Asbestos Head” is not a book about the Hollow Earth, as erroneously stated by one of the other reviewers. I downloaded the work (it's free) in the hope of reading some entertaining stuff about flat earth conspiracies or the like. Instead, I was forced to sift through a short fiction story with an almost stereotyped “hippie” message.

Everything is subjective, everything constantly changes, Christianity and capitalism are authoritarian, love and sex should be free, why bother having kids, smoking weed and using psychedelic drugs is the way to go, live in the Now, love and forgive everyone unconditionally, meditate á la Zen, read Kerouac or Alan Watts…

Weirdly, this wasn't published circa 1967, but in 2008! I frequently laughed out loud when reading about Asbestos Head (the main character) and his weird friends Pin Head, Pot Head and Machine Head, to mention just a few. The hippie and love summer message is absolutely undiluted, making you see how absurd and unpractical it really is. Several characters are typical “misunderstood geniuses” or “INTJs” who come across as awkward and slightly autistic to everyone else. The solution to all problems seems to be to empty your mind and stop thinking altogether (or, I suppose, smoke weed). The anti-social angle is also obvious.

Interestingly, the short story has a misogynistic slant. The two women, Matriushka and Mary, are the two most negative characters. Mary (her name isn't a co-incidence) is depicted as a prostitute who once claimed to experience a virgin birth. Matriushka is a shallow promiscuous gossip who nevertheless demands “commitment” from Asbestos, who refuses and treats her to a lecture on free love. In the last chapter, Matriushka is locked up in a basement and apparently abandoned by a Zen monk! That a story about unconditional love and anti-authoritarianism turns out to be anti-female may or may not tell us something about the author's own “issues”. Another interesting fact is that Machine Head, who is a Cyborg and part of a hive mind, is treated as a positive alternative to humanity, although he too falls short of the true vibes of the Now.

What's the story *really* about? Presumably mimicking Robert Heinlein, the author reveals in the very last chapter that Asbestos Head is Jesus Christ who has returned to Earth to teach his true gospel. This presumably explains why his parents are named Joseph and Mary (the prostitute – note also the conflation of the Virgin Mary with Mary Magdalene), while Asbestos himself is said to be an “orphan”. Since Jesus-Asbestos turns out to be a hippie Buddhist, the world refuses to listen, prompting the misunderstood savior to commit Japanese-style suicide (seppuku) in the last chapter! Without this plot twist, the story would just be a long litany of pseudo-spiritual preaching for the eternally unsaved.

I was waiting for the Flat Earth /Hollow Earth material, so I admit I was somewhat disappointed by “Asbestos Head”, but I suppose you get what you (don't) pay for. The author Eric Dubay describes himself as a 30+ American living in Thailand where he teaches Yoga and Wing Chun part time while exposing the New World Order full time. His Youtube channel does include expositions on the Flat Earth, but also attacks on “Freemasons” and “Jews”, making you wonder how unconditionally he really loves his fellow men (or Cyborgs). But yes, if you're into conspiracy, I'm sure there's more where this stuff comes from…

About the Author
The Author: Vwadek P. Marciniak received his master’s degree in political philosophy from Columbia University and his doctorate in early modern intellectual history from the University of Missouri. Under the name of Dick Martin, he taught in the Humanities Department at Michigan State University (1966-1992) where he also aided in the creation of the Whole Works and Contemporary Humanities programs as well as a course on England during the Enlightenment. He is also the author of Towards a History of Consciousness: Space, Time, and Death (Peter Lang, 2006).

About the Author
E. W. Bullinger (1837-1913) was a direct descendant of Johann H. Bullinger, the Swiss reformer. Bullinger was a lifelong scholar and writer studying at King's College, London. In 1862, he was ordained in the Church of England. He is also the author of the notes and appendixes of The Companion Bible and the author of numerous works including Commentary on Revelation, Great Cloud of Witnesses, How to Enjoy the Bible, and Number in Scripture.

The Witness of the Stars

I would give the new publisher, Cosimo, one star. It does not have the fold-out of the 48 constellations in the back as does the book published by Kregel, and it has "Astrology" written on the front cover. This is a book on Biblical Astronomy per the author. Bullinger would be turning in his grave if he knew his book was being classified as Astrology. I teach Biblical Astronomy and purchase this book (from Kregel) for my students. I will no longer purchase this book from Amazon.com if this is the only version of it they have.

The following applies to the version published by Kregel Publications: This is one of the best works available on Biblical Astronomy. I have been a student of Biblical Astronomy for over 25 years. This is the book that first got me interested in the field. It is very concise in its Biblical interpretations of the constellations and star names. The book is also very informative as to where the constellation pictures came from. The Witness of the Stars is a masterpiece that brings ancient light to a new generation. I am now a full time Biblical Astronomer and have myself written a book on the subject which concerns recent celestial events. I would not have had a clue of where to begin if it were not for this work by E.W. Bullinger.

I bought this book from Amazon and it is published by Kregel and does have the fold out in back displaying all of the constellations. Not bad

Overall not bad read. The book gets to involved into the details of personnel like awards,badges etc. I was Hopi ng it would have described the final battle of Wittman but it did not

Detailed History of top Waffen SS Tiger Commanders!

The Eastern Front experiences of the world's most successful tank ace, Michael Wittmann, and those of his fellow Waffen SS Tiger commanders of the Leibstandarte Division are covered in this first of two volumes published by Stackpole Books.

This first volume does provide a great deal of information of Wittmann and his comrades and the combat activities of the 4th (Heavy) Company from its creation in January 1943 to early June 1944 when Wittmann & his comrades, now part of the 101st SS Panzer Battalion, found themselves in France awaiting the Allied invasion. Numerous first-person accounts of Wittmann, the man and the military commander, abound. Though many are written in the stilted, stiff wartime style, they do present a coherent picture of an exemplary commander and a superlative fighting leader. The book also includes testimonials to other Waffen SS commanders and many accounts of Eastern Front action. Unfortunately the book, originally published in Germany, is a ponderous read.

The book also features over 300 photographs of Wittmann, his comrades, their tanks, Soviet opponents, etc. Unfortunately photo reproduction quality is poor; most shots are muddy. There are a number of battle maps included but they are are hard to understand and add little to the narrative. I did find the inclusion of the various units' Order of Battle fascinating. At a single glance you could see how many tanks the unit possessed, supporting flak units, scout cars, supply trucks, etc. and realize how large an organization the 10st, for example, was.

All in all, Agte's book is a mixed blessing. Lots of info on Wittmann, other Tiger commanders and Eastern Front battles but it's presented in a plodding, graceless narrative. Lots of rare photos but they're poorly reproduced, etc. Reasonable price ($19.95) but remember: you still need to pick up volume 2 to see how it all ends!

A bit disappointed

I purchased this book and volume 2 on the hope of reading about Michael Wittman, at the time of this review I had not started the second volume.

The book does have a lot of information about the Tiger Aces of the Leibstandarte and their battles / triumphs but Michael Wittman has been regulated as one of the Tiger Aces. The book does give a number of mentions of him, but if you are looking for a history solely on him you are going to be disappointed, I gave the book 3 stars for that reason only, for an overall history of the Tiger Aces the book is worth 4 stars.
