Glad to meet Joe Dillard and Scott Pratt

This was the first Joe Dillard book I read and I will read others. I found the character well-developed and believable. His internal struggles with his own limitations and the varying degrees of imperfections in other people and the legal system were clearly defined. I ended up liking and respecting Joe. The plot movement was easy to follow without being predictable. The story caused me to think about the people and their character even after I finished the book. A very good experience.

Embrace Berger Too

One of the wisest voices of our time, John Berger, has pieced together 17 thoughts or, 'dispatches'(with its military connotations) about the post 9/11 environment which we now, all share. For most of his long life, Berger has sided with the powerless and dispossessed, even taking the step of quitting a high profile career in London, where he seemed to be at the cutting edge of art criticism with his ground-breaking,'Ways of Seeing' made for BBC T.V and never out of print in book form.He relocated in a peasant village in rural France, to immerse himself in what would form the subject of some of his most compelling writing.There has been no diminishing of power in his thought or eloquence as he gains his senior years. The Palestine issue, in particular, gets coverage. And he returne to the pitiless paintings of Francis Bacon for what I suspect will be his final published view of him. And there is a re-contexturalising of the great Piero Pasolini; Berger having just watched his 'La Rabbia'(how and where can I ever get to see this?). I guess, I wish the collection had more in it. But what is there is potent, direct and as usual, poetic. Which leads me to its title; not one of John's pieces, but the publication in its opening pages of a very beautiful poem by one, Gareth Evans. Have a squizz! For more on art visit>rodmoss.com

good but enigmatic

I love reading John Berger. He is an original thinker.
I don't always agree with his point of view but I love to read it.
This book was very moving at times but also very enigmatic. I think
that Mr. Berger is such a sensitive man that art criticism offers a safer space,
than political discourse,to provide a more succinct point of view.
I felt when reading his book the human tragedy that is going on
now in the middle east is so hard to believe even when one is a witness to it.

These women have relocated their struggle to the West, where they seek empowerment and wrestle with the law. While showing the limits of autobiography, Between Rites and Rights boldly interweaves Freudian hysteria, the surgical age, the world of high fashion, male circumcision’s “fearful symmetry,” and Western body modification.

NYC-based Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz is the founder and host of the three-time National Poetry Slam Championship venue, NYC-Urbana. Cristin has published five books of poetry and Words In Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam - a Washington Post Notable Book on Exploring Poetry. Her poetry has appeared in McSweeney's Internet Tendencies and Rattle. This touring poet-diva has performed the Sydney Opera House in Australia and The Drums Inside Your Chest in LA and is currently the 2010-2011 ArtsEdge Writer-In-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania.

Truth + Humor = Poetry

Cristin's wit, intellect, and vivacity show throughout Working Class Represent. She is a poet of the people - finding and showing the poetry in everyday living, capturing truth in her poetic lens, and wrapping it in humor to make it more palatable and more poignant.

Forget for a moment...

Forget for a moment how witty and funny and sometimes heartbreaking and moving these poems are. Forget that there is a poem about loving a nerd ("Qaparha!", which is Klingon for "I love you"), that pretty much is worth the cost of the book on its own. Forget how inspiring this book is to any working artist, let alone any working poet. All you really need to know is this: this book will get you through a crappy day at work. Maybe even several. And isn't that the greatest gift in and of itself?

What happens to a dream... on caffeine?!

"Working Class Represent" captures the sensational wit that comes with the functional despair of the 9 to 5. This book is packed with charm, honing the moments and intricacies between the daily rituals. Aptowicsz isn't afraid to call the daily rituals out for what they really are, as perfectly executed in the poem "Ode To My Morning Cup Of Coffee." This book realizes the importance of hard work through juxtaposing it with our hugely beautiful and complicated lives outside of work. "Working Class Represent" is both brilliant and relatable, confessing to hushed thoughts, such as a universal sadness towards money; a sadness that grows from necessity. There is an ongoing investigation of social concepts circling "career" and "status" and really, what the heck IS "business casual?" I read this book on an airplane and laughed out loud. I hate laughing in public, especially above sea level! The poem "Hotel Room" truly encapsulated what I felt "Working Class Represent" as a whole, communicated: a truth equally tender, jovial and important.

"Penguin Readers" is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. The latest book offered by M. D. Creekmore is called The Prepper's Guide to Surviving The End of the World as We Know. This useful guide quickly and easily covers the full range of essentials in stockpiling and equipment from water, food, and tools to medicine, communications and weapons.

It's a 176-page book that it is chock full of really good advice about the most important areas. A big benefit of such an accessible book is to get a quick overview of essential preparedness so you can see where you might have gaps in your own setup. No single book can cover everything in complete detail so this "primer" includes recommended reference books in each topic--all of which appear to be practical, useful books for rounding out your reference library.

Within his guidelines are a few nuggets of in-depth reviews, like his personal experience with hand grain grinders and animal traps. We were glad to see the he got water purification issue right: he first recommends filters and only reluctantly chemicals.

I would probably have done the medical section a bit differently, but at least, he does mention natural and alternative remedies and sources. Most people forget about preparing for dental problems and he mentions some good options there. His comprehensive coverage of what makes a good Bug Out Bag is worth the price of the book alone, and comes complete with pictures of the type of gear he uses to prepare for a quick exit.

This is an excellent guide for everyone. He adds a lot of practical, tactical advice to his lists which is very valuable even if you are advanced in your preparations. It is nice to "compare notes" with other experts. The book is rooted in practical advice and is quite motivating because of the concise way he cuts through the clutter of unknowns.

Where to begin? Well, those who know me personally and even those familiar with my own books and magazine articles all have a pretty good idea about my perpetual appetite for survival-related information, and nowadays we sure do find a plethora of books, videos, magazines, and websites from a growing list of survival experts devoted to this realm, don't we? I am especially impressed with this new resource from this long-time prepper, author, and blogger MD Creekmore, and one area where I think it ascends higher than most other available prepper resources is in the comprehensive scope of it. This new book is so loaded with valuable long-term survival preparation ideas and common sense as to make it a godsend resource for every prepper's library in my humble opinion. To mention just some of the topics discussed, it addresse some of the author's reasons for prepping, water purification and water storage, food storage and other food considerations, urban gardening, raising chickens and other animals, self-defense and emergency tactical cosniderations after a societal collapse (with a brief and thoughtful overview of survival firearms), medical considerations, an in-depth discussion on bug-out bags and weighing the options of bugging out vs hunkering down, prepper communications, animal trapping, edible wild plants, bartering, long-term survival tools and gear, and plenty more. From this book I have learned things like which two-way radios are most suitable for which types of communications, and which types of traps are most suitable for harvesting specific kinds of animals, among so many other useful tidbits I'm sure I'll think of after I post this review. I intend to re-read it several times and keep it for reference. I've been looking for a book like this for quite a while, and now finally here it is. No way I can avoid going five stars on it.

Everything you need and nothing you don't to make it in a TEOTWAWKI...

Like his personal blog MD Creekmore is cogent and to the point in this book An easy read, but also a very informative one. If you are new to prepping and survival then this is an excellent guide to get you started the right way. If you have been prepping for years like me it is a great read to check if you are deficient in one area or another. What I love about the writings of MD is his practical solutions and seeking out low cost items you need, but still ensuring these are of sufficient quality. This is all gear he uses, so you know it passes muster. The guy lives the self sufficient life style so he is no armchair prepper. Good stuff and money well spent.

Another great book by an author who actually lives the life he writes about. I was happy to see that this book was like the previous books I've read by this author, and not filled with fluff and unrelated anecdotes. Just good factual info on how to get from unprepared,to prepared for any emergency. Great book for beginners as well as seasoned preppers. I found some areas in my own preparedness plan that I had overlooked thanks to M.D. Creekmore.
